White House Announces Government Worker Layoffs as Shutdown Approaches Three-Week Mark

The White House confirmed the initiation of federal worker layoffs on Friday, following through on prior threats in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office posted on social media that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the government’s procedure for terminating staff.

Although Vought did not specify which departments were impacted, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that notices had been issued within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a union representing federal workers announced that employees at the Department of Education would be affected by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives cautions that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on services relied upon by the public and pledged to contest the actions in court.

This is shameful that the government has exploited the funding lapse as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who provide critical services to the public nationwide,” said Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the news, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Congressional Democrats have refused to vote for a Republican-backed bill to reopen the government unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until the following week, indicating the standoff is not expected to be resolved before then.

During a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, blasted Senate Democrats for not supporting the GOP bill, which was approved in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.

Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to do their job and end the shutdown,” the speaker said. Beginning shortly, military personnel, who often live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Previously, labor groups filed for a court injunction to block the administration from implementing any layoffs during the shutdown. Additionally, a court official directed the administration to disclose details on layoff plans, impacted departments, and if any federal employees had been brought back to execute staff reductions.

A report contended that a government shutdown restricts the authority of the government to carry out firings, referencing official advice that acknowledged any long-term staff cuts need to have been initiated prior to the shutdown began.

Consequences for Employees

These terminations occurred on the same day that federal workers got only a partial paycheck for the final days of September but excluding the start of the current month, since funding lapsed at the beginning of the month.

Max Stier, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the political stalemate’s impact on government workers.

“It is wrong to make federal employees bear the burden because our elected officials in Congress and the administration have not succeeded to keep our federal operations running,” Stier stated. “Our flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not responsible for this funding crisis.”

The irony is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries during the shutdown.
