The moment is right to change Man Utd's tactical setup - the manager insists.

Man Utd captain Bruno Fernandes was one of multiple senior stars to miss the holiday period win against Newcastle United.

Boss Ruben Amorim says that altering Man Utd's formation due to public noise would have signaled "the end" for him.

For the first time against Newcastle, Amorim ditched his trademark back three formation with wide defenders and instead use an traditional four-man defense with two holding midfielders.

Amorim acknowledged this effectively transformed into a six-man defensive block in the closing phase as his side dug in for a win - securing only their second-ever shutout of the campaign.

While he once famously said that even the highest authority could compel him to change his system, Amorim insists the option to play with varied setups has remained part of his long-term vision.

Nevertheless, he emphasizes he could only implement the change when his team were faring at an acceptable level - lest it would appear as if he was succumbing to outside criticism.

"At the time I arrived here last season, I understood perhaps I didn't possess the players to perform effectively in a back three, but it was the start of a process," he said.

"The goal was to forge an identity. Today is a distinct moment. We don't have a lot of personnel, and we need be flexible, so they see the reason we are changing.

"It is not because of the pressure of you guys, or the supporters.

"Whenever media discuss altering the system repeatedly, I can't change because the squad will think I'm changing because of external voices and I think that is the end for the coach.

"Once we are performing strongly in our system, that becomes the right time to change.

"This will help us grow into a better side because when our full complement of personnel are back, we are not going to employ a back three in every match."

Availability Challenges Persist

With only two wins in eight games before beating Newcastle, it is debatable whether Amorim is right to say his team have been playing well.

He is, though, working with a severely stretched squad, with multiple first-team players already confirmed absent for the forthcoming home game against winless Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That total will rise if midfielder Mason Mount fails to recover the knock that forced his withdrawal from the Newcastle game at the interval.

Captain Bruno Fernandes is a key name who will be absent for the Wolves match, even though he is reportedly pushing his boss to allow him to return following his hamstring injury.

"Bruno is already insisting he has to practice," said Amorim. "However there is no chance he is going to feature against Wolves. No chance. You can quote me on that."

Fernandes' Leadership Remains

However, the 31-year-old will probably continue to be a prominent presence, as while most injured players watch matches from the stands, Fernandes was observed keeping a close eye on the warm-ups from the mouth of the player's tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim expects his leader to continue offering insight.

"He is a natural leader," he stated. "He cannot be that guy that when he is absent, he's not talking and speaking. He's constantly vocal. That is the reason he's the captain.

"He has flaws at times - the way he gesticulates - but he has a multitude of positive qualities. Even after he finishes treatment, he goes to watch the other guys practicing. There are a many aspects you don't see.

"I'm not sure if he desires my job or not, but he's a born leader. The guy is a true captain."

Return Schedule for Injured Players

While the precise timeline for the captain's comeback - and that of fellow injured stars like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - remains unknown, before the conclusion of January, the club will welcome back Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from continental competition.
