Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that patients who stop using popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying such medications should be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to original weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually see a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

People who have stopped the medication explain a intense resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
