Cyclone Melissa Grows Stronger While Barrels Towards Jamaica

This powerful storm has struck Haiti and the Dominican Republic

Cyclone the storm is projected to strengthen into a infrequent Category 5 hurricane as it shifts towards the Caribbean island, bringing life-threatening sudden floods and mudslides.

The cyclone, which had winds of up to 120 miles per hour as of 6:00 AM GMT, is now shifting toward the northwest in the Caribbean region and is projected to reach land by midweek, as reported by hurricane specialists.

Warnings of blackouts and disruption to utilities have been announced as the hurricane produces up to thirty inches of rainfall and sea level surges as high as 4m above ground. "Seek shelter now," residents have been urged.

The cyclone is the 13th hurricane in the ongoing Atlantic storm period, which normally finishes in the eleventh month.

Most Intense Storm Danger

A category five hurricane is the strongest type, with wind speeds of at least 157mph.

Although this storm is projected to reduce in intensity to a category four cyclone before arriving at Jamaica, experts said there was "very little practical difference in the overall impacts" upon reaching the coast, and that the hurricane will be "equally strong" when it strikes the nation.

Critical Preparations

With tropical storm-level gusts and precipitation already expected long before it passes over Jamaica's central region - perhaps encompassing the national capital - warnings emphasize that "safety measures need to be finalized quickly".

"A multi-day period of harmful winds and torrential rain has started and will cause devastating and dangerous rapid water accumulation and multiple landslides," advised meteorological officials.

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness said: "I realize that there are countless citizens who are worried, who are deeply troubled, and appropriately: concern is justified.

"Yet the most effective method to manage anxiety and any unease and concern is to stay ready."

Inhabitants are being instructed to protect their properties with sandbags and timber panels, and to stock up on basic necessities.

Wider Effects

Warnings are also active for parts of Haiti encompassing the primary urban center, the adjacent nation and Cuba's eastern region, where the hurricane is anticipated to bring comparable impacts by the middle of next week.

Rock slides already being caused by the storm have already killed two in the country, according to emergency services.

Future Course

The hurricane is predicted to move across Cuba by Wednesday before passing across the Caribbean archipelago and entering the open ocean.

By the time it arrives at the Caribbean nation, it is anticipated to have reduced to a third-level cyclone.

Environmental Context

Although it is challenging to connect specific storms to climate change, researchers say it is making weather phenomena more prevalent and more extreme.

Warmer oceans produce additional humidity in the air, aiding in the creation of tropical cyclones.

Before the commencement of this season's Atlantic storm period, weather organizations forecast higher-than-average occurrence, citing elevated ocean temperatures and potential more intense weather patterns around West Africa - where hurricanes typically originate.
