Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
